what is garlic?

The word garlic comes from Old English garleac, meaning "spear leek". Native to Central Asia, garlic dates back over 6,000 years. In recent times New Zealand has made the product its own, consistently producing high quality crops and providing customers with the best garlic in the world.

Egyptians worshipped garlic and placed clay models of garlic bulbs in the tombs of the Pharaohs – they also gave it to the slaves building the pyramids to enhance their endurance and strength. They valued garlic so highly that it was even used as currency- we’ve tried this but non-foodies just don’t get it!

Greek Olympian athletes were said to have chewed garlic before events, and soldiers consumed it before going to war. There are well known myths that garlic repelled vampires, protected against the Evil Eye, and warded off jealous nymphs said to terrorize pregnant women and engaged maidens. Garlic also has alleged aphrodisiacal powers - we cannot comment on the accuracy of this!
